A clinical perspective (and CME) on intravenous thrombolytic therapy for acute ischemic stroke

A good deal has been learned over the past several years about the use of intravenous thrombolytic therapy following an acute ischemic stroke. The June 2, 2011 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine contains a case-based discussion that helps to put the current knowledge into clinical perspective. In the context of the case presented, the author provides a review of the literature and guidelines on the use of thromobolytic therapy. This discussion and review with commentary is provided by Dr. Lawrence R. Wechsler of the Department of Neurology of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
