Antiplatelet therapy does not need to be stopped before primary care dental surgical procedures

Henry I. Bussey, Pharm.D., FCCP, FAHA
December, 2006

Reference: http://www.dundee.ac.uk/tuith/Static/info/antiplatelet.pdf

Antiplatelet therapy does not need to be stopped before primary care dental surgical procedures - That is the conclusion of a review from an evidence-based website in Great Britain available at http://www.dundee.ac.uk/tuith/Static/info/antiplatelet.pdf. In addition to their discussion, a meta analysis of 74 studies examined the risk of stopping aspirin prior to various surgeries. That report found that discontinuing aspirin therapy for surgery was associated with an increased risk of stroke, acute coronary syndrome, and peripheral vascular events. ClotCare editorial board member Sam Goldhaber provided a commentary of this meta analysis at http://www.clotcare.com/

. In summary, it appears that antiplatelet therapy does not need to be discontinued prior to most dental procedures and, by extrapolation, it would appear that stopping such therapy may increase the risk of stroke, acute coronary syndrome, and peripheral vascular events.
